COLLEGE STUDENT WITH ARABIC FLASHCARDS DETAINED AT PHL
A California college student says he was handcuffed and detained at Philadelphia International Airport recently after TSA screeners discovered Arabic flashcards in his backpack. Nick George admits the words "terrorist" and "explosion" were among the 200 or so cards in his backpack, though he says he was simply using them to translate stories in the Arab press. "I understand I might warrant a second look," George says, though he believes five hours of detention -- spent partly in handcuffs -- was extreme.

Meanwhile, a TSA spokeswoman says George was singled out by behavioral detection specialists even before he reached the airport metal detectors. During questioning, George's "behavior escalated to a point where our officers deemed it necessary to contact the Philadelphia Police Department," she says. Philadelphia Daily News (09/11)
